Using the iconic story of Bizet’s Carmen as subtext, this new, avant-garde operatic piece plumbs the dark side of human behavior…with a twist. This is the story of a contemporary female archaeologist intent on excavating the remains of the feminine archetype. With a mix of opera, text and performing objects, the piece explores the fine lines between desire and love, freedom and captivity, even history and fiction. Written by InTandem Lab’s Gisela Cardenas in collaboration with composer Milica Paranosic, this second production from InTandem Lab also features a pair of hunimals, fantastical creatures who challenge our notions of gender and reality.

It is bitter cold. Rank corruption festers at the center of power, indulging in excess while war looms on the horizon. Denmark is a prison, and for Hamlet there is no way out but through murder, suicide, or madness.
